Beer couldnt be a bigger part of the culture, there is no such thing as "3pt beer", it is all 5.5% or higher, and there is, in my estimation, at least as much of a "car culture" here. Yet the problem isnt as bad over here. There is more than one reason for this, but without a doubt one significant factor is that one beer is enough to land you a DUI here. While I dont know the ramifications of a DUI here, I do know it is taken no less seriously than in the US. I thought it was an unreasonable law at first but I now recognize the wisdom in it, if you know you cant start drinking even a little bit, then you are far far less likely to accidentally surpass that amount where your judgement is impaired and you get too drunk to drive safely. Which in all honesty is probably how 99% of DUIs occur. This approach is very effective and does not encroach on anyone's personal liberty, namely their liberty from unreasonable search/seizure. I suppose now that the TSA has everyone travel-trained in the US now, I shouldn't expect too many Americans to hold much value at all for this civil right. Next up in my opinion should be the government taking on the gut-wrenching tragedy of child abuse and child sexual abuse. This problem is so damaging and so widepsread that all residences should be required to be fitted with surveillance equipment to ensure that no children are being harmed or molested. It would certainly reduce sexual abuse of children to almost zero, and that in itself makes it worthwhile.
